Hikers Assistant+ is a mobile app for any iPhone, iPad or Apple watch running iOS 15.0 or newer or Android phone/tablet running Android 8.0 or newer. For on-trail use, the device needs GPS capability; i.e., it should not be WiFi-only.

Hikers Assistant+ (HA+) is a different kind of hiking and backpacking app. If all you want is a map (with a large annual fee), try Gaia; they have great map servers. If you want GPX trail routes, try All Trails; along with their annual fee.  FarOut (previously Guthook's app) is practically indispensable if you are doing a thru hike (again for a hefty fee). HA+ can give you most of their functionality, and some they don't provide, at a really low, one-time fee, but you will need to do some preparation for your outing. Here's some of our functionality:

- Download basemaps for on-trail trail mode (no internet) use
  • USGS topo, imagery, contours, hydro, trails, hillshade, tinted hillshade, NAIP plus, and elevation data
  • Open Street Maps (and derivatives) and Thunderforest maps in iOS
- Access internet basemaps for trip planning and on-trail city mode
  • Apple standard (streets), satellite, and hybrid (streets and satellite) in iOS
  • Google terrain, streets, and satellite in Android
- Trip planning
  • Metadata editor for trail [system] name, description, country code and mile marker options
  • A file & folder module that lets you import, export and share files including binary trail files, GPX files (GPS exchange format), images, and PDF's. iCloud is available on iOS. Google drive is available on Android
  • Waypoints table editor to change icons and edit waypoint properties such as name and description
  • Waypoints map editor to add new waypoints and change locations
  • Track editor lets you edit GPS track metadata, download maps, and split/combine/reverse/delete tracks
  • Route editor lets you edit route metadata, download maps, and create/split/combine/reverse/delete routes
  • Declination (difference between magnetic & true/map north) map for adding declinations for on-trail use
  • Activity & weights screen lets you set activity (hike, jog, run, cycle, paddle) and hiker/pack weights
  • Off-trail map lets you explore basemap and map element (waypoint, routes, tracks) options as well as downloading basemaps, elevation tiles and weather forecasts. You can also create new routes
  • Elevation profiles can be shown for any loaded routes and/or tracks
  • Hike log shows data on hikes created on-trail using GPS (Add Track or Quick Trail) or pedometer (Quick PED)
  • Trail days log shows pedometer data for days where on-trail module is used, from first going on-trail to last exit from on-trail
  • Viewer editor lets you assign images & PDF's (maps and other documents) to trails to assist in quick access while on-trail
  • Audio notes table lets you review and create audio notes and audio waypoints to eliminate typing on-trail
  • Map manager lets you review and delete downloaded (offline) basemaps
  • Weather forecast lets you obtain multi-day forecasts for on-trail use. Apple weather is used in iOS. National Weather Service is the primary provider in Android, with Open Weather maps as a back for non-US locations
  • Help subsystem provides help on topics of interest and on how to use various app functionality
- On-trail module
  • Lockable screen with large, high-visibility buttons for each task and a progress data bar at the bottom
  • Progress bar shows pedometer distance, speed, and steps, as well as GPS distance, speed, and elapsed time
  • Compass button (active pointer) opens an analog compass screen with optional waypoint target
  • Trail info button shows elevation, closest waypoint (active pointer), closest point on trail (active pointer), sunrise/sunset, and moon phase
  • (3) Hike buttons start, stop and pause hikes that collect GPS and pedometer data (Add Track and Quick Trail) or only pedometer data (Quick PED)
  • Map button opens a map at your location, shows device heading, allows the user to center on their location, track the user with heading, track heading, and change basemaps
  • Waypoints button shows closest 10 (or all) waypoints ordered by distance. An active pointer indicates direction, and a touch will open the compass with the waypoint shown as a target
  • Elevation button shows elevation profiles for loaded tracks and/or routes, with the user's position marked on the closest (first) trail
  • Trail day progress button shows pedometer based progress for the trail day in the progress bar. In iOS, the data is shown for the touched instant. In Android, the progress bar is continuously updated
  • (3) Add waypoint buttons that include common (changeable to all) icons for trail/city, sites, and animals
  • Add audio waypoint button lets the user record an audio comment that is attached to a waypoint
  • Viewer button shows a list of images/PDF's associated with the current trail. Touching one opens the image or PDF for viewing
